AMD-Based Virtualization Solutions Deliver Leading Scalability While Slashing Total Cost of Ownership
AMD-Based Systems Can Reduce Cap-Ex by up to 30 Percent; $130,000 per Rack
SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 08/27/12 -- VMworld 2012 -- AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced that virtualization environments running on AMD Opteron™ processor-based servers offer superior price/performance while reducing capital expense (cap-ex) by up to 30 percent(1) versus comparable solutions. The findings, based on recently published VMmark™ 2.1 benchmarks of high-end systems, can amount to $130,000 in savings(1) or more for a single server rack, enabling IT decision makers to greatly reduce cap-ex and total cost of ownership (TCO). In a separate announcement, AMD also announced today the launch of its AMD FirePro™ S9000 and S7000 server graphics products.
Another test using VMware ESX™, a more typical virtualized environment consisting of mid-range processor and memory configurations, reveals that AMD Opteron processors lead in both price as well as price/performance(2) versus Intel-based systems. And yet a third test with Hyper-V running 14 to 38 virtual machines, also using mid-range processor and memory configurations, shows that AMD Opteron-based servers offer not only superior price/performance but also scalability as server utilization increases(3).
"Virtualization is a sweet spot for AMD Opteron processors," said Suresh Gopalakrishnan, corporate vice president and general manager of Servers, AMD. "Servers using high core count AMD Opteron™ 4200 and 6200 series processors today consistently provide our customers with outstanding scalability and lower cost per VM in virtualized IT environments for server consolidation and building public or private clouds."
AMD will be showcasing its virtualization solutions at VMworld® 2012 through August 30 in San Francisco's Moscone Center, booth 801. It will be demonstrating the HP DL385p and the Dell PowerEdge R815 servers with VMware vSphere™ and View™, the graphics path capabilities of vSphere with AMD FirePro™ graphics boards, and also showing first looks at the AMD Opteron module for the AMD SeaMicro platform.
AMD Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Mike Wolfe, and VMware Chief Platform Architect, Rich Brunner, will be speaking at a super session titled "Transforming Your Business Through Cloud Computing," today at 3:30 p.m. (PT). Additionally, AMD Field Engineer Ruben Soto will be discussing "NUMA Performance Consideration in VMware vSphere," in a breakout session at 11:40 a.m. (PT), also today.
